REDMASS, a gallery that opened at 105 W. Parrish Street on Sept. 12, is about much more than just art.

In the words of Artie Barksdale, REDMASS is about celebrating community in Durham.

Located near the corner of Parrish St. and Mangum St., and above The Hair Estate Inc., the gallery is collaboration between Durham artist and visionary promoter Artie Barksdale and his sister, Shavonne Barksdale, and Raleigh resident Derrick Bryant.

They say they want to use the gallery as a space to allow other local artists to show their work and to help enliven the arts in the community.  They are also hosting a painting event open to the community on Oct. 31 in the yard in front of the gallery. (Check out the next edition of the VOICE for more details).

Durham VOICE videographer Lisa Marie Albert captured the passionate community-minded artists talking about the touchable REDMASS artwork and their community-building goals.
