The Hillside theater department will be putting on West Side Story, Martin Said So and Why Mosquitos Buzz for its 2012-13 season.

Hillside’s theater department will be offering education matinees along with weekend shows.

The dates for West Side Story will be from Nov. 8 to 11. Martin Said So will run from Feb. 7 to 10. Why Mosquitos Buzz will be showing from March 21 to 24.

Hillside Theater Director Wendell Tabb doesn’t foresee any issues in the future, but said “producing theater is always challenging.”

Talent, budget and availability are the factors that are considered when deciding what plays to put on, he added.

Tabb put out a charge for Hispanic students and faculty to participate in the production of the plays, and he plans on continuing that outreach.

West Side Story is a modern adaption of the classic Romeo and Juliet. It is set in New York and it features two gangs, the Jets and Sharks.

Hillside senior Tyra Scott will be playing the role of Maria, while Emmanuel Tabb will be playing the role of Tony. Emmanuel Tabb stated that West Side Story is “one of the greatest shows in all times.”

Remembering the lines, songs and blocking will be Emmanuel Tabb’s biggest struggle as Tony.

Scott said getting the role of Maria was “very surprising” because she didn’t audition for a speaking part. Scott added that she “just wanted to dance.”

Scott said it took a lot of studying to get comfortable with the character of Maria, and it was intimidating at first.

“We have to give our all – 100 percent,” she said.
