The Latino community in Durham is pulling together in a big way to lend a helping hand to earthquake victims in Haiti. On Friday, Feb. 5, three Durham-based businesses will sponsor “Unidos por Haiti” (“United for Haiti”) a fundraising party at La Luna nightclub. This event will be followed by a youth-led carwash Saturday afternoon in the La Luna parking lot.

El Centro Hispano, one of the sponsors, is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life for Latino Durham residents. This public service organization was inspired by a desire to help from within and by popular demand from the outside community.

“We had a lot of people calling us, asking how to donate to Haiti,” said Executive Director Pilar Rocha-Goldberg.

El Centro Hispano is partnering with La Luna nightclub, Velasquez & Associates, Los Portales Mexican Restaurant and La Mega 1310 AM, a local Hispanic radio station, for “Unidos por Haiti.” Because El Centro Hispano works with many local Latinos, it is spreading news of the event and recruiting volunteers. La Luna is providing the space and resources. La Mega 1310 AM is providing publicity and will be broadcasting live from “Unidos por Haiti” on Friday.

Lorenzo Alvarez, the owner of La Luna, estimates that Friday night’s event will raise about $3,000. Attendees will be asked to make a $10 donation to the cause upon entering the nightclub. “Unidos por Haiti” will be staffed entirely by volunteers including management, bartenders and a live DJ. “We are donating our space and our time,” Alvarez said. “We really want to help.”

El Centro Hispano, La Luna and La Mega 1310 AM also joined forces last winter to collect toys for children around Christmas time.

Donations from Friday night’s fundraiser and Saturday’s carwash will be donated to Partners in Health, an organization that seeks to bring modern medical care to poor communities in countries around the world.

PIH has been providing medical assistance in Haiti for more than 20 years.

According to the organization’s annual report, it employs more than 11,000 people worldwide and 38.5 percent of its total funds are spent in Haiti. Funds raised from “Unidos por Haiti” will go specifically toward PIH programs in Haiti. Sponsors encourage anyone not able to attend Friday or Saturday to donate directly to Partners in Health.
