The Carolina College Advising Corps is a program designed to help schools with a high population of low-income minority students who usually don’t go to college.   There are at least 31 college advisers in schools all around North Carolina.

Hillside’s college adviser, La-Deidra Matthews, helps the counselors out with the college application process so they have more time to focus on the students’ other problems.

“Counselors are supposed to deal with all the other issues (family issues, emotional issues) and sometimes college can get lost in the sauce,” Matthews said.

“That’s what college advisers are for essentially,” she said.

Stackhouse shot a video to show his support. He also shot a few hoops with Hillside senior basketball players Trevion Thompson and Timothy Mangum and gave a presentation, along with Matthews, to a sophomore history class.

Matthews thinks the video will be a success.

“We had a lot of fun shooting it. We got a lot of information,” she said.

The video crew came a month before Stackhouse’s visit. They interviewed Matthews, Hillside Principal William Logan and other students during College Application Week.
