On May 29th, Durham will get to experience fine dining and exercise at finest. The third annual Doughman, a team relay quadrathlon and competitive eating competition, will be held downtown.

It is set to end at the Durham Farmers’ Market Pavilion, right in the heart of Central Park. Three Duke graduate students, who were inspired by the Krispy Kreme Challenge, came up with the idea.

Instead of doughnuts, the Doughman uses local restaurants to provide food for the competitive eating aspect of competition. It draws attention to all the special cuisine that we have right here in Durham. It supports sustainable living and takes pride in having everything locally grown.

This year’s stops for the quadrathlon include Dain’s Place, Hog Heaven, Dos Perros, Broad Street Cafe, Locopops, NOSH and Local Yogurt.

Not only does the Doughman support local businesses, it also supports local organizations. In the previous years, its charitable support has raised over $13,000 for SEEDS, and inner city gardening program.

This year, its profits will go to SeeSaw Studio and the DIG program. Through these efforts, the Doughman has also gotten a lot of press attention, locally and nationally.

The Doughman is surely unique to Durham. When the time rolls around, I will be sure not to miss it!
