Fast Facts about voting

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • If a convicted Felon, citizenship must be restored
  • A legal resident of Durham County for 30 days by the date of the next election
  • 18 years of age. Persons 17 years of age can register and vote in the primary if they’ll be 18 by date of the General Election
  • Each voter must complete a Voter Registration Application and mail or deliver it to the elections office at least 25 days prior to an election. Then a voter registration card will be mailed to you once your application has been processed.
  • Your voter registration card provides you with useful information such as your precinct number and polling location. Also displays your jurisdiction. Card is not required on election day in order to vote.
  • You need to register or request a change in registration only if you have not registered in Durham County before, have moved since last election, (it is a violation of the law to vote in your old precinct if you moved more than 30 days prior to the election), if you wish to change your party affiliation, or have legally changed your name.

If registering at the one-stop early voting site, the qualified North Carolina resident who missed the 25-day deadline can register and vote at the early voting site during the One-Stop Absentee Voting period. The period extends from 19-3 days before Election Day. In order to use this process citizen must go to the site, fill out an application, and have proof of residency by showing election officials appropriate form of identification.
