Community is more than just a group of people in a similar living situation; it helps define us as people.
One’s community is what gives each one of us a sense of belonging and love. A community can make a change, and together have a larger “voice” in their area.
The Northeast Central Durham VOICE is all about capturing that voice and trying to reach people.
My name is Zenzele Barnes, and I am the teen editor of the VOICE. I am a senior at Jordan High School this year. My aspirations for the future are what keep me driven. Even though I was not aware of it, growing up and learning what I am good at has prepared me tremendously for working on the VOICE — and for the future.
Right now, I am exploring who I am as individual and finding my place in the world. I am a textile artist and I sew in my free time. By sewing to creating my own fashions and taking inspiring photographs, I let the world know who I am.
I am extremely excited to work again on the VOICE for a second year. To me, documentation, whether through pictures or words, is a part of impacting the future.
Durham is such a wonderful place to grow and experience new things. Since I grew up here, I have a strong sense of community and I want to do my part in helping to spread Bull City pride.
