An annual religious women’s empowerment conference in Durham will reach out to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people April 24 – 26.

The sixth annual We Are 1 Conference will showcase performers, guest speakers and workshops.  The conference will take place at the Marriot in the Research Triangle Park. It is organized by a non-profit group called Infinity Diamond Club.

“Not very often do you see inclusion and diversity promoted at national events,” said conference sponsor Lorraine Johnson. “This is a world class conference that is more rewarding personally than professionally. It’s an eye-opening experience. You discover so much about yourself and become comfortable with who you are and those who are different.”

Guest speakers at the conference include Charlotte Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield. The conference will also feature local artists and choirs, a comedy show, and the stage play Underneath it all. The conference ends Saturday with motivational speeches, panel discussions and vendors. That night the royal ball will be the finale.

“Anyone is welcome to come,” Coleman said. “Everyone needs to know that knowing you’re different, doesn’t take away from who you are. We are all one and God loves all people.”

The goal is to bring individuals together for fellowship, unity and empowerment. The theme is Free 2 Be Me.

“The topics of the workshops drew me to it,” said Patrice Gould-Hatwood, a conference regular. “It’s a great opportunity to find people who are different. It makes you challenge yourself to do and be more. It’s also a break to replenish, rejuvenate and connect spiritually.”

Priscilla A. Coleman, president of the Infinity Diamond Club, said the conference is “not an event, it’s an experience.”

“This conference allows you to be who you are, be proud and not have to pull back or feel less than,” Coleman said. “We want people to walk away with healthy, healed and whole lives.”
